Description

Day 1: Alicante
Individual arrival in Alicante. After sorting out your luggage, explore Alicante: an open city overlooking the sea that has a quiet promenade in winter, but becomes incredibly vibrant in spring and summer with its many chiringuitos (beach bars). Don't miss the historical center, El Barrio, which is crossed by narrow streets and teeming with cute bars and cafes. From here you can climb the famous and spectacular Santa Barbara Castle, overlooking the promenade. In Alicante, there’s an unusual custom called el Tardeo, where people meet near the central market in the afternoon, just to socialize in pubs and bars. Here you can immerse yourself in this lively atmosphere among the people.

Day 2: Alicante – Altea / Calpe (220 miles; +560 feet)
Today you will ride near Alicante beach, along the promenade you will arrive at Playa de San Juan and El Campello, where you will have the opportunity to visit the archaeological site of L’illeta dels Banys, one of the most important in the Mediterranean region. You will pass Benidorm, which was once a small fishing village. Continuing on, you will observe the magnificent views of Puig Campana, an imposing mountain, until you reach Altea. This town, famous for its artists, still has its historic promenade and attractive old town, which are a must-visit.

Day 3: Altea / Calp/Benissa – Xàbia (12 miles; +390 feet or 22 miles; +1380 feet)
Today you will ride in a contrasting landscape between the coast, the fields, and the mountains of the hinterland. The views of Alicante’s coast and the imposing mountains will be your backdrop along the way. Then, pedaling among the vineyards and traditional Riu Raus, typical buildings with rows of arches where locals used to dry grapes indoors for producing sultanas and raisins, you will arrive in the historic city of Xàbia, which boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Alicante.

Day 4: Xàbia – Denia (16 miles; +560 feet)
You will ride along Montgó mountain until you arrive in Denia. Along the way, you will encounter the Riu Raus once again, these buildings were once central to the grape-drying activity, which have now become open-air markets. Later you will arrive in Denia, a city with a thousand dreamy beaches that you can enjoy even in winter on sunny days. Denia was designated a UNESCO Creative City in 2015, for the quality and variety of its excellent local dishes.

Day 5: Denia – Gandia (25 miles; +525 feet)
You will leave Denia to come across small remnants of marshland known as marjals, a nesting place chosen by many species of birds and a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts. You will ride parts of the old railway line built by the English in the 19th century and after a few miles, you will reach the beautiful coastal city of Gandia, with its interesting historical district and Ducal Palace.

Day 6: Gandia – Cullera (18 miles; +295 feet or 29 miles; +395 feet)
You will start the day by riding on quiet roads and paths that wind between the orange groves, venturing into a pretty little valley and following part of the pilgrimage route that connected several monasteries and along which you will encounter the impressive Simat de la Valldigna monastery. Riding amongst the rice fields, you will arrive in Cullera, a coastal city with splendid sea views where you can taste some of the local rice specialities.

Day 7: Cullera – Valencia (26 miles; +260 feet or 32 miles; +310 feet)
Choosing the longer option, you will start the day by cycling along the banks of the Xúquer river, whose waters irrigate the numerous and lush fields and woods of the whole district. You will venture into the nature reserve known as Albufera Natural Park, one of the most precious ecosystems in the Mediterranean: here you can admire different natural environments such as lakes, swamps, sand dunes, and pine forests lining the seafront, each with their own flora and fauna. It's worth sampling one of the typical dishes of this area, very special. You can then take a walk near the port and watch the fisherman at work, before returning home in the picturesque El Palmar. Once you reach Valencia, explore the formidable historic center, with its cathedral and the magnificent central market. Do not miss the alleyways and squares full of cafes, bars, and restaurants: food lovers will surely be pleased! The city is also famous for its nightlife.

Day 8: Valencia
After a good breakfast, end of services and individual departure.
