Description

Day 1: Amsterdam – Monnickendam/Volendam by sailing ship
Your week of biking and sailing on the IJsselmeer starts in Amsterdam. The crew will welcome you on board around 2:00 PM. After check-in, the ship will motor towards Monnickendam or Volendam. From the harbor of one of these former fishing villages, you can take a lovely stroll through the historic center after dinner.

Day 2: Monnickendam / Volendam (32 or 51 km) | Volendam – Hoorn by boat
Today, a typical Dutch day awaits you: you will bike to a nearby family-run cheese and clog shop for a brief demonstration of cheese and clog making and, of course, a cheese tasting. You will then continue along the dikes to Purmerend, in the heart of a polder called De Beemster, located 3.5 meters below sea level. Created over 400 years ago when the Dutch converted an inland lake into pastures, it is recognized by UNESCO as a creative masterpiece due to its narrow geometric grid design. Your next destination is Edam, a charming town whose streets and canals are worth a walk. Edam is famous worldwide for its cheese covered in red or yellow wax. This practical solution keeps the cheese fresh for a long time, allowing 17th-century sailors to take it on their journeys and trade it for spices and other riches from the East. Through the main dike of the IJsselmeer, you will arrive at the waterfront of Volendam, where the ship is docked. Later in the afternoon, the ship will sail towards Hoorn.

Day 3: Hoorn – Enkhuizen (28 or 39 km) | Enkhuizen – Urk by boat
Through small hamlets and rural villages, today's stage will take you to Enkhuizen. You will pass by the windmill De Krijgsman (The Warrior), the tallest windmill in the province of North Holland, surrounded by some old Dutch windmills still in use for producing flour. In the 17th century, Enkhuizen was one of the richest towns in Holland, thanks to the spice trade (then very expensive) from Asia. Be amazed by the majestic mansions, canals, churches, and city walls that still reflect the town's rich history and prosperity. In the afternoon, weather permitting, we will sail across the IJsselmeer to the port of Urk. Onboard, you can assist the captain during navigation or simply sit on the deck and enjoy the journey, observing seabird life. In the evening, you can stroll through the streets and alleys of Urk. As you will see, the houses of this picturesque fishing village were built next to each other on raised grounds to protect them from the water.

Day 4: Urk – Vollenhove (37 km)
After breakfast, you will bike along the lake on a paved bike path to the former island of Schokland. After the reclamation of the Noordoostpolder in 1942, Schokland, just like Urk, ceased to be an island. Since 1995 it has been part of the UNESCO cultural heritage. You will then continue your bike ride through the polder to Vollenhove, another charming fishing village.

Day 5: Vollenhove – Giethoorn (37 or 49 km)
From Vollenhove, bike paths through open countryside lead to the town of Blokzijl. Here you enter the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, the largest freshwater wetland in northwestern Europe, an oasis of peace for plants, animals, and humans. A bike path through the heart of the park will take you far from the roads, immersing you in the tranquility of this region. Keep your eyes open for a fleeting kingfisher or, if you are really lucky, an otter, the park's emblem. You will then pass through Kalenberg, a village that until the 1950s could only be reached by boat. A winding route through an agricultural landscape of narrow fields surrounded by dikes will bring you to the delightful town of Giethoorn, known as the Little Venice of the North.

Day 6: Giethoorn – Lelystad by boat
Today you can enjoy a full day of sailing and relaxation aboard. Once again, you can help the captain navigate if you wish. Or you can just sit on the deck and relax. In the early afternoon, the sailing ship will arrive in Lelystad, the capital of the province of Flevoland, entirely reclaimed from the sea. Here you can take a break to visit the Batavia Werf, an extraordinary shipyard where ships with significant maritime history are recovered and restored to their former glory. Or go shopping at Batavia Stad, an outlet with all the famous brands. After docking, a real captain's dinner will be served onboard.

Day 7: Lelystad – Blocq van Kuffeler (20 or 29 km) | Blocq van Kuffeler – Amsterdam by boat
In the morning, you will disembark for the last half-day of biking. You will pass through the Oostvaardersplassen, a nature reserve. Some sections of the ride meander through forested areas, while others offer panoramic views of vast reed beds and marshlands. This is a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts. The ship will pick you up at the small port of Oostvaardersdiep for the return journey to Amsterdam. You will then celebrate this wonderful week around the IJsselmeer with a farewell dinner aboard the ship.

Day 8: Amsterdam
The tour ends today after breakfast and the end of services. Disembarkation is expected by 9:30 AM, with individual departures. Until the next adventure.
