Description

Day 1: Avignon

Individual arrival in Avignon. After settling your luggage, if you have time, take the opportunity to visit this beautiful city that between 1375 and 1378 hosted the Papacy of Clement V who preferred Provence to Rome, where he believed the air was unhealthy.

Day 2: Avignon – Arles (55 km)

After collecting the information material and the bicycles at 09:30 in your hotel, your first bike stage will begin on hilly terrain that has numerous ups and downs. Having left Avignon, you will cross a beautiful Provence full of vineyards and towns with a typically Mediterranean style, until you reach the pretty medieval village carved in the stone of Les Baux de Provence. This village, clinging to a cliff and partly dominated by ruins, offers an extraordinary panorama that on clearer days reaches the Mediterranean. From here you can admire a wonderful view of the surrounding lands that will simply leave you breathless. At the end of the stage, you will reach Arles, with the unmissable Arena and the Roman Theatre, testimonies of its glorious past, the portal and the cloister of the Church of Saint Trophime, all part of the Unesco world heritage.

Day 3: Arles – Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (40 km)

Moving away from Arles, you will leave the hills and gradually enter the flat landscape of the Camargue, rich in marshes, lagoons and rice fields, a territory in constant change, where wild nature seems to want to take over. This small piece of land on the edge of the sea, seems a parallel universe compared to the classic Provence, but at the same time it is complementary to it. Crossing the Rhone you will arrive at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, where you will discover an enchanted place: the town seems to have come from a drawer's pencil, with its network of streets and white houses that at sunset are tinged with the warm light of the sun. Here stands the fortified Church of the Holy Maries, dedicated to Sara, patron saint of the gypsies, who every year between May 24 and 25, go on pilgrimage to the town.

Day 4: Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer – St. Gilles (40 km)

After a hearty breakfast, you will leave Saintes Maries de la Mer, a town with timeless atmospheres, with its white houses and the Romanesque church with a spectacular view over the entire Camargue. You will cycle surrounded by fascinating and unique landscapes among marshes, lagoons, rice fields, salt pans and cultivated lands on the sea. After crossing the Rhone by ferry and having ridden a few kilometers by bike, you will arrive at St. Gilles with its Romanesque church and its famous crypt. The abbey was built in the 12th century and is considered one of the most important destinations of Christian pilgrimage during the Middle Ages, after Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostela.

Day 5: St. Gilles – Pont du Gard (45 km)

Having left St.Gilles, you will ride on beautiful roads full of vineyards and towns with a typically Mediterranean style, with a breathtaking view of Mont Ventoux, one of the most famous climbs of the Tour de France. Continuing the route you will reach the famous Roman aqueduct of the Pont du Gard, a majestic three-level bridge, which overlooks the entire area with its 50 meters high.

Day 6: Pont du Gard – Uzès – Pont du Gard (40 km)

On small roads and cycle paths you will cross some charming villages before arriving at Uzès, one of the most beautiful cities in Provence. Walk in the medieval center of the city and visit the cathedral of Saint-Théodorit dating back to the end of the eleventh century. Returning to Pont du Gard you can stop to swim in the Gardon river, so we advise you to bring your swimsuit.

Day 7: Pont du Gard – Avignon (50 km)

The last bike stage will bring you back to Avignon. In the morning you will cross the gentle hilly landscape of the Garrigue up to the famous wine city of Tavel. In the afternoon take the opportunity to make a delicious wine tasting. Subsequently, pedaling on quiet roads immersed in vineyards and along the river Rhone, you will arrive in Avignon.

Day 8: Avignon

After breakfast, end of services and individual departure.
