Cities not to be missed
There's always a good reason to visit the cities of Emilia Romagna: Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna and then continue to Romagna with Rimini, Ravenna, Forlì and many others. Although close to each other, they are very different: Parma is known for its noble past and for the French influence left by Duchess Maria Luigia, Reggio Emilia is the city of the Tricolor flag, Modena is the city of the Ghirlandina and the splendid Piazza Grande, both Unesco heritage, and Bologna, a university city par excellence, has unparalleled charm.
Rimini and Romagna, on the other hand, are Fellini's lands, but also of amusement, Forlì is the city of rationalist architectures and Ravenna, in addition to being the city of mosaics, is known in recent years for its urban redevelopment projects.
In between there are a myriad of villages, towns, villas, and castles scattered between the plain and the mountain, it's impossible not to fall in love with them.
Emilia Romagna is like this: within its 260 km length from the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea, it's a true paradise for cyclists.
Bike routes in Parma
Parma is known as the Little Paris and like most of the Emilia Romagna cities, you can comfortably tour the entire city by bike. To discover the beauty of the center, you can follow a nearly 5 km route that leads to the exploration of Piazza del Duomo, Piazza Garibaldi, Basilica della Steccata, Teatro Regio, and other historical places of the city. It is an easy route, suitable for the whole family.
Not only the center, Parma is also beautiful to visit in its province, such as Fontanellato which you can reach by bike with a 57 km total route (ring path) of easy travel. In Fontanellato, you can find not only the historic Rocca but also the largest labyrinth in the world, the Masone Labyrinth: a surreal place not to be missed.
There is also Torrechiara with its splendid castle and Langhirano, the city of ham factories, which are connected to Parma by a 24 km route, always easy to travel.
Finally, there is Colorno with its Reggia inspired by Versailles which always manages to enchant everyone.
Bike routes in Reggio Emilia
Reggio Emilia and its province range from the Lands of Canossa to the lowlands along the Po river, on the places of Don Camillo and Peppone.
Among the most interesting bike routes in Reggio Emilia there is the ring of Bismantova Stone, a 15 km circuit that reveals the wonders of the Apennines.
If you wish to discover the Apennine again, but with a more challenging itinerary, there is the ring Collagna - Busana - Ligonchio - Collagna of 37 km and with a difference in height of 925 meters uphill.
To go for castles instead you have to follow the route Quattro Castella - Canossa, Rossena, and Ciano which is of intermediate difficulty and 24 km long. In this route you can discover the Castles of Bianello, Canossa, and Rossena.
Finally, to explore the evocative places of the Bassa, beautiful in autumn with the fog, you can go the Brescello - Boretto itinerary, following a stretch of the Eurovelo 8 and has a total length of 5 km.
Bike routes in Modena
If you wish to immerse yourself in the beauty of Modena, there are plenty of bike itineraries taking you not only to the city center, UNESCO heritage, but also to its wonderful province.
To get to know Modena and its plain you can follow the Modena - Carpi itinerary of easy travel, which is 23 km long. Alternatively, there are the Modena - Maranello routes for Ferrari fans, or Modena - Vignola, not to be missed especially during spring, in the flowering period of the cherry trees.
In the Apennines among the most scenic bike routes there is the one connecting the Nymph Lake with Mount Cimone, for 4.8 km of itinerary with a difference in height of 306 meters uphill. If instead, you wish to immerse yourself among the hills and the first Apennines you can follow the Casona - Sassi of Roccamalatina - Casona route: a ring circuit of 23 km that will take you to the beautiful Regional Park of Sassi of Roccamalatina.
Bike routes in Bologna
Bologna is so varied that you only have embarrassment for your choice of bike outings. Let's start from the ring of the historic center which in 14 km takes you from the Market of Herbs to the MAMbo, Museum of Contemporary Art, passing through the Two Towers, Neptune's Fountain and the Arena del Sole.
Not only, if you wish to discover the surroundings of Bologna, there's the route leading from the city center to the Hermitage of San Luca, for 7.3 km of itinerary with a difference in height of 216 meters uphill. Always towards the Apennines, there's the ring route that leads to the discovery of the Badia Abbey and the ancient villages of the Samoggia Valley. For MTB fans there are numerous routes such as the ring of the Madonna del Faggio or the ring of Monte Cavallo, perfect to combine sport and nature.
Bike routes in Rimini
Rimini is not only the city of the sea and fun, but it is also the ideal starting point for bike routes that lead to the exploration of Romagna. From Rimini, you can reach Cervia, Cattolica or Cesenatico with simple 20-30 km routes suitable for the whole family.
If you want, you can push yourself up to the Marche with the Cesenatico - Gradara strong ring of 40 km. You can also dedicate yourself to the discovery of villages such as the beautiful Santarcangelo di Romagna or Verucchio and the Valmarecchia.
Bike routes in Forlì
Between rationalist architectures and dreamlike Apennine landscapes, Forlì is a true paradise for bike lovers.
If you wish to push yourself towards the coast you can follow the Forlì - Cervia itinerary which, along a 38 km route, takes you to the beautiful saltworks park. If you are a wine lover instead, you can dedicate yourself to the routes that take you from Forlì to Bertinoro or the Predappio ring: lands of Sangiovese and Albana wines. To discover the beauty of the Apennine landscapes, both in autumn and in spring, there are the routes that take you from Premilcuore to the discovery of the Casentino Forests, or the Cusercoli - Pieve di Rivoschio - Rocca di Civitella ring.
