What is the Eurovelo cycling network

EuroVelo is the European cycling network, a project by ECF (European Cyclists' Federation) which aims to develop a network of long-distance routes across 42 European countries.

The project was presented in the mid-'90s and began to take concrete shape from 2007, planning over 70,000 km of cycle paths, of which more than 40,000 km already exist.

The Eurovelo cycling network was created with the aim of creating a network of cycle paths that cover the entire European continent contributing to unite it and make it more accessible with sustainable transport. It seeks to generate cooperation between countries facilitating the transit of tourists throughout Europe. The goal is to promote the bicycle as the best practice for sustainable tourism and as a solution against pollution caused by car traffic.

In many cases, the routes were created by joining existing national cycling paths, while in others they were specifically created, integrated and connected.

Eurovelo's routes are numbered from 1 to 19 according to a specific criterion: the routes with odd numbers cross the continent from north to south, and those with even numbers from west to east, with some exceptions, such as these circular paths:

  • EuroVelo 10, running along the Baltic Sea coast

  • EuroVelo 12, which follows the North Sea coast

To date, not all routes are complete, well signposted and with the same services. However, it can be said that in general, the routes that cross countries with a good tradition of cycle tourism are among the most developed.

So how can you travel the Eurovelos without encountering unexpected mishaps? Among our bike trips in Europe, some cover sections of Eurovelo and are perfect routes for both those who are more experienced and those who have less experience with cycle tourism.

Eurovelo 1: the Atlantic Coast

From Portugal to Scandinavia, the Eurovelo 1 route runs along the western border of the European continent for no less than 11,000 km. To travel it in its entirety is certainly not for everyone, but if you want to taste the flavor of a long-distance route, one of the most fascinating stretches, which we recommend you travel, coincides with the Vélodyssée, cycle route that runs along the entire Atlantic coast of France, from the Basque Country to Brittany.

This stretch of the Eurovelo 1 does not present particular difficulties and develops about 80% on roads without traffic, crosses some of the most fascinating seaside resorts in France and allows you to experience a really unforgettable bike and sea holiday.

Eurovelo 5: the Via Romea Francigena

The Eurovelo 5 starts from Canterbury and reaches Brindisi, crossing 7 European countries, in the footsteps of the pilgrims who in the Middle Ages traveled from England to Rome.

Among the most interesting routes are those from Milan to Pavia, along a stretch rich in artistic and gastronomic treasures, as well as sections of the Tuscan Via Francigena.

The route from Milan to Pavia is suitable for everyone, including children and beginners and is ideal to be lived in company, while the second route, with some more significant differences in height and dirt road sections, is suitable for those who already have a good experience.

Eurovelo 7: along the Sun Cycle Route

The Eurovelo 7, also known as the Sun Cycle Route, is one of the longest and most interesting European cycling tourist routes, which stretches for over 7400 km connecting North Cape with the island of Malta. It crosses the heart of Europe with some of the most beautiful art cities in the world, offering a perfect route for cycling tourists who want to discover art, culture, nature and traditions of the Bel Paese: Verona, Mantua, Modena, Bologna, Florence and the countryside landscapes of Veneto, Lombardy, Emilia and Tuscany.

This gives you the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful bike ride immersed in nature and to discover five wonderful art cities, admiring their artistic beauty and tasting the typical dishes, rich in a strong culinary tradition.
