What to do and not do on a bike: 10 useful tips

More and more people are choosing to travel by bike. However, choosing the most suitable destination is not the only important thing about the trip: always keep in mind what to do or not do on a bike, to avoid unpleasant mishaps.

The bicycle is the perfect means to travel in close contact with nature, rediscovering a more authentic bond with the nature: not having to worry about traffic is an additional element to live your experience in a calm and relaxed way. Pedalling on your own bike can give a wonderful sense of freedom, but it is also important to be aware of the right moves to make and the mistakes to avoid.

10 useful tips of things to do and not to do on the bike

1. Follow a healthy and balanced diet

Before leaving and during the journey it is important to eat correctly, so as to face the journey in the best shape. It is particularly important to follow a balanced diet in the days before departure, avoiding fats and sugars, which are unnecessary for the body and are the main cause of weight gain.

2. Dedicate yourself to daily training

Before embarking on a new journey it is essential to prepare the body according to the level of activity to be faced, thus getting used to the effort. Depending on the chosen destination, you can develop a training plan: surely, once on the journey, you will feel great improvement.

3. Get used to wearing a helmet correctly

Safety should be a priority on any trip. That's why it's important to remember that the helmet must always be used and must be worn in the right way: the straps must be pulled to the right point (between the strap and the chin a maximum of a finger should pass, no more), otherwise in case of a fall they could unhook.

4. Prepare suitable luggage

Before leaving it is good to consider what will be essential during your trip. Never forget an emergency kit and sports clothes: these details can make the difference. As a checklist you can use our infographic with the essential items of clothing to face a bike trip.

5. Hydrate often

The categorical imperative of every cyclist is to remember to stay hydrated to avoid discomfort or heat stroke: drink water, not too cold, often and in small quantities, and always have a spare water bottle is something to never forget.

6. Avoid earbuds while cycling

Cycling with earbuds in your ears is never the best choice, even if you are cycling on a bike path. The noises around become imperceptible and the risk of causing accidents increases exponentially: the beauty of cycling in contact with nature is also to listen to the sounds of nature or the voices of passers-by!

7. Avoid fruit just before exertion

Before facing physical exertion on your bike, try to avoid eating fruit: it indeed increases intestinal activity and acidity and all of this can negatively affect your performance. It's better to consume fruit away from physical exertion, when the body will be able to digest properly absorbing the substances it needs.

8. Respect your limits

Never exaggerate with physical exertion: even with 125-130 beats, without being out of breath, it is still a great pace. Doing activities also means learning to know your limits and respecting them.

9. Perform maintenance on your bike

Before starting a trip it is important not to neglect your bike: a check on tires and brakes is essential to start your holiday in safety and tranquility.

10. Never put yourself in danger

A trip should always be pleasant and relaxing, not a source of risk. For every experience there is a right moment, so assess your level of training and adapt your itinerary to this: exaggerating is never the winning solution!
