Description

Day 1: Vienna
Individual arrival in Vienna. Free time to visit the Austrian capital: the Hofburg Palace, St. Stephen's Cathedral, the historic center, the Belvedere Castle and the Albertina Museum; alternatively, you can enjoy shopping in trendy stores and local product shops, or relax in one of the historic Cafés savoring a slice of Sacher.

Day 2: Vienna – Bratislava (70 km)
After breakfast, departure from Vienna cycling along the extensive network of city bike paths. Beyond Vienna, you will cross the Donau-Auen National Park, where you can admire local flora and fauna and varied landscapes. After passing Orth Castle and the village of Eckartsau, where there is a Baroque hunting estate, you will reach Bad Deutsch Altenburg. From here you can take a trip to the excavations of the ancient Roman settlement of Carnuntum, one of the most important Austrian archaeological sites. After Hainburg, you will reach the border with Slovakia and its capital, Bratislava. Here you can visit the old town, the castle and the church of St. Martin.

Day 3: Bratislava – Mosonmagyaróvár (45 km)
This morning, after another short stretch in Slovakian territory, you will pass to Rajka, the Hungarian border. Already during the first kilometers in Hungary, you will see delightful small villages dedicated to agriculture. The route then takes you to the area called Szigetkoz, where numerous lateral tributaries of the Danube flow, before arriving at Mosonmagyaróvár, known as "the city of 17 bridges".

Day 4: Mosonmagyaróvár – Györ (40 km)
Even today you will cycle surrounded by nature and passing numerous small farming villages, including Hedervar, an ideal place for a lunch break. Its castle is located in the middle of a protected park. Once you reach Györ, take some time to visit the city that is rich in attractions. A visit to the bishop's castle with the Doczy Gothic chapel, the 15th century cathedral with the bust of Saint Ladislaus and the town hall is definitely worth it.

Day 5: Györ – Komárom (55 km)
Leaving Györ, you will cycle inland through the Hungarian plain towards the gentle valleys of Transdanubia. You will soon arrive at Bábolna, where the best and fastest horses in Hungary are bred. Today's destination is Komarom, a city divided in two by the Danube, which in this case also corresponds to the border between Slovakia and Hungary. In fact, they are two distinct cities: Komárom the Hungarian and Komárno the Slovak.

Day 6: Komárom – Esztergom/Visegrád (55 km)
From Komárom you will cycle along the banks of the river, in the flat Danube valley. You will pass different small villages and in the background, you will see numerous vineyards. The sportiest can opt for the route that goes through Tata, which includes some ups and downs, hence it presupposes good training. Continuing, you will arrive at Kelemantia castle and finally at Esztergom, the birthplace of Stephen, the founder and first king of Hungary. Esztergom is called the "Hungarian Rome" and it is home to the largest and most imposing basilica in all of Hungary, which contains one of the largest altarpieces in the world. You will then take the boat to Visegrád: enjoy the incredible view of the evocative Donauknie, the famous bend of the Danube (the boat does not operate in April, September, October and all Mondays: in this case, the crossing will be replaced by a train ride).

Day 7: Esztergom/Visegrád – Budapest (55 km)
Leaving Visegrád, famous for the Royal Palace and the ruins of the Renaissance castle, you will continue along the Donauknie, probably the most fascinating section of the Danube cycle path. You will cross the renowned Baroque city of Szentendre, the artists' town at the gates of Budapest, home to numerous art galleries and workshops worth visiting. Finally, upon arrival in Budapest, take some time to visit the Hungarian capital famous for its bridges over the Danube and its romantic river landscapes.

Day 8: Budapest
After breakfast, end of services and individual departure. Possibility to extend the stay.
