Start cycling through the 160 square kilometers of the Ljubljansko Barje, the largest wetland with aquatic meadows in Slovenia, formed where there was once a lake that dried up 6,000 years ago, leaving behind an extremely diversified landscape, now home to some of Europe’s rarest bird, plant, and insect species. You can choose to take a short walk in the Iški Vintgar Natural Reserve or visit the remains of Europe’s highest railway viaduct in Borovnica. Day 8: Štanjel – Lipica – Divača (50 km; +630/-360 m)
Pedaling on quiet roads, you will reach the Sežana Botanical Garden, then visit the Lipica Stud Farm, where the splendid Lipizzaner Horses, famous worldwide, are bred. Their history is closely linked to that of the Vienna Riding School. Take a ride in a traditional carriage and watch them perform; it will be an unforgettable experience.
