Description

Day 1: Bergen
Arrival in Bergen. We recommend exploring this famous port on the west coast of Norway, one of the oldest in Europe and a hub of commerce since the beginning of the 12th century. A vibrant historic city, Bergen is the country's second-largest. The most iconic site is undoubtedly the Bryggen Wharf, with its colorful wooden houses lined up along the pier, offering a postcard-pretty view and taking you back to the times when the city played a pivotal role in the Hanseatic League. St. Mary's Church, dating back to 1180, is the tallest and oldest building in the neighborhood, while the Hanseatic Museum provides an interesting insight into the daily life and work of the German merchants who lived here. Next to the museum stands the Bergenhus fortress, one of the best-preserved in Norway, which houses the Håkon's Hall, dating back to 1250 and used as a royal hall during the Middle Ages. A stone's throw from Bryggen Wharf is another must-see city attraction: the bustling Fish Market, where you can also find vegetables, fresh fruit, and local crafts, as well as a range of restaurants serving a vast selection of Norwegian specialties. Among the essential things to do in Bergen, there is also a trip to Mount Fløyen, which can be reached on foot or by panoramic funicular, where you will enjoy a bird's eye view of the city, or you can visit the Bergen Aquarium, located near Nordnes Park and city center, which is home to sea lions, crocodiles, and fascinating snakes. Overnight in the city center. We recommend booking an extra night at the beginning or end of the tour to have more time to visit this magnificent city.

Day 2: Bergen – Sognefjorden – Vik by Boat
After breakfast, we'll sail towards the western islands before entering Sognefjord, where we'll take in awe-inspiring, snow-capped mountains reflecting in the waters. From the boat, we'll also see small villages nestling on the fjord shores and waterfalls of all shapes and sizes.

Day 3: Vik – Arnafjord – Vik (52 km)
After breakfast, we'll start biking on small, quiet secondary roads, surrounded by mountains and spectacular waterfalls, until we reach the tiny village of Arnafjord. We'll then traverse the Eitrestrondi Natural Park, a protected area due to its peculiar vegetation. The grocery shop in Framfjorden provides tables for a relaxing break or for a swim in the public beach area on our route. After a picnic lunch on the fjord at Arnafjord, we will return to Vik.

Day 4: Vik – Vangsnes – Menes – Balestrand (66 km)
In the morning, we will journey on the famous Sylvringen trail, a scenic cultural route that will take us to some astonishing historic sites. Continuing towards Vangsnes, we'll encounter the Fritjof statue before crossing the fjord by ferry and reaching Dragsvik. We'll continue our journey on quiet roads, surrounded by mountains and picturesque villages. The typical geographical formation of the fjord arms will offer diverse landscapes at every turn. Lastly, we'll cover a few kilometers on a secondary road and arrive at Menes, where we can revel in the silence and enjoy a brisk walk outdoors before reaching Balestrand. Balestrand is a popular holiday resort from the 18th century, frequented by notable figures and famous artists from all over Norway and beyond, attracted by its stunning fjord-side location and magnificent landscapes. We'll stay at Kvikne’s Hotel (1877), splendidly situated facing the fjord and a fine example of the so-called 'Swiss style' or 'dragon style'.

Day 5: Balestrand – Fjærland (38 km)
Today, we'll venture into the stunning fjord arms. We'll start with a ferry from Balestrand to Fjærland. Fjærlandsfjord is a striking and picturesque fjord, characterized by mountain peaks shrouded in glaciers. This fjord is distinguished by its vibrant green/turquoise color, resulting from the glaciers melting. It will be an exceptional cruise from Balestrand, a matchless experience, along this stunning fjord arm to one of the arms of the Jostedalsbreen glacier. The Fjærland Glacier Museum offers a deep dive into knowledge about glaciers and how mankind has learned to coexist with these constantly changing natural wonders. The museum presents a spectacular movie projection with a 180-degree screen that transports us on a virtual adventure through the glacier.

Day 6: Fjærland – Sogndal – Solvorn (44 km)
After a hefty breakfast, a short transfer awaits us through the tunnels beyond Fjærland. We will then follow the old road through the Sogndalsdalen valley to Sogndal. The Sogn area has historically been dedicated to fruit farming. In Sogndal, the region's hub, we'll access a cycling path that runs along the fjord. The city-center shops and cafes make it an ideal place for a break. After lunch, we'll head further into Barsnesfjord and reach Solvorn, magnificently situated by the lake.

Day 7: Solvorn/Hafslo – Skjolden (34 km)
In the morning, we'll embark on a small ferry that will take us to Urnes. Once landed, a climb of about 700 meters will take us to the oldest 'stavkirke' (typical wooden church) in Norway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From here, we'll enjoy a magnificent view of the fjord. We'll leave Urnes biking along the Lustrafjord, the innermost arm of Sognefjord and naturally the most beautiful one. The 'Romantic Road' will then lead us to the spectacular Feigum waterfall, 218 meters tall, where we can take a 100% natural shower or a swim. In the afternoon, we will arrive at Skjolden, located at the fjord end, where we can choose to sip a drink on the hotel terrace or at the cafe, or simply relax on the beach.

Day 8: Skjolden – Sogndal/Leikanger
After breakfast in the hotel, we'll transfer to Sogndal or Leikanger for departure and end of services. From Flåm, you can take the train to return to Bergen or to Oslo.
