Description

Day 1: Cognac
Individual arrival in Cognac, which can be reached by train from La Rochelle, Bordeaux or Paris. Overnight in a central hotel, which can be reached with a short taxi ride or a 10-15 minute walk from the train station. It is possible to park the car in the hotel garage (supplement) or park for free on the street.

Day 2: Circular tour around Cognac (49 or 55 km)
You will leave Cognac on small roads along the Charente River, heading towards Jarnac. You will follow the river through villages and vineyards, until you reach Jarnac, where you can visit the headquarters of Courvoisier. Jarnac is also the birthplace of the late former French president, Francois Mitterrand, who is also buried here. A museum displays the many gifts he received on official visits.

Day 3: Cognac – Saintes (44 km)
Today you will leave Cognac heading West, on slightly hillier roads than the previous stage. You will find a nice spot for a picnic on the grass, outside the Abbey of Fontdouce. The abbey is open to visitors and is in Romanesque style, typical of the region. In the afternoon, a pleasant descent will take you to the Charente River, where a small ferry will take you to the opposite bank, at Chaniers. Overnight stay in Saintes.

Day 4: Saintes – Rochefort (55 km)
Saintes hosts the only arena and Roman theater on the west coast of France. Leaving Saintes, you will cycle on small and easy roads from one village to another, almost all beautified by at least one church, a castle and a cafe, to take a short break. At the end of the day you will reach Rochefort, an important 18th century naval port on the west coast, where you will spend the night.

Day 5: Circular tour around Rochefort (49 or 60 km)
In Rochefort you can visit a true replica of the frigate Hermione, anchored in the harbor. There is also an old rope factory (La Corderia Royale) turned into a museum. After a few kilometers, a small ferry will take you across the Charente River. Heading South, you will pass in front of the villages of Brouage and Marennes, among the marshes, and then, through a large stretch dedicated to oyster farming, where you can admire the typical small boats and the so-called cabanes, the huts used by oyster farmers.

Day 6: Rochefort – La Rochelle (43 km)
Today's route will take you North, along the coast, passing through the villages of St. Laurent, Yves and Châtelaillon-Plage. You will also pass through several beaches, so make sure to have your swimsuit with you! You will arrive at La Rochelle on the seafront and your hotel will be in the city center.

Day 7: La Rochelle and Ré Island (42 or 52 km)
Today's tour will take you to the most beautiful island on the French Atlantic coast, the Isle of Ré. A long bridge with a lane for bikes and one for pedestrians, will lead you to this popular summer destination, where you will cross the splendid coastal villages of La Flotte and St. Martin-de-Ré, with beautiful beaches and restaurants for an outdoor lunch.

Day 8: La Rochelle
After breakfast, end of services and individual departure or extension of the trip.
