Description

1° day: Mâcon
Individual arrival in Mâcon, an important communication node, once a frontier between the Kingdom of France and the Germanic Empire. Today, the town has the typical appearance of a southern city, with colourful façades and round-tiled roofs. Hotel accommodation.

2° day: Mâcon – Tournus (40 km)
You can rent a bike between 9:00 and 10:30. Starting from Mâcon, the first cycling stage takes you along the Voie Bleue, which follows the course of the Saône river up to Fleurville and the castles of Marigny and Marfontaine. You then continue on paths and small roads to the abbey complex of Saint Philibert, an 11th century masterpiece of Romanesque art. The final destination is Tournus with its beautiful old town; enjoy an evening walk when the illuminated city is reflected in the river.

3° day: Tournus – Chalon sur Saône (30 km)
After breakfast, you take up the cycle path that runs along the Saône and then leaves the river to cross Gigny. The stage takes you through green bucolic landscapes in the plain between the Saône and Grosne. You then reach Saint Loup de Varennes, where Joseph Nicéphore Niepce, the inventor of photography, lived; in Saint Rémy, you will find the banks of the Saône up to nearby Chalon.

4° day: Chalon sur Saône – Cluny (52 km)
The green route starts directly in the city and leads towards the northwest to Givry, and then turns towards the southwest and the beautiful fortified village of Buxy, in the heart of the vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise (Mercurey, Givry). Always in the midst of green vineyards, you cross Saint Boll and the medieval town of Saint Gengoux le National. You will then reach Cormatin, a medieval city with a 17th century castle and a garden and maze which are definitely worth a visit. The stage then continues through Taizé and finally, after the last 13 km, you reach today's goal, Cluny, famous for the Benedictine abbey founded in 910, one of the most important monastic complexes in Christianity.

5° day: Cluny – Mâcon (28 km)
Leaving Cluny, the places that marked the childhood of Lamartine, a great lyrical poet of French Romanticism, await: enjoy the beautiful hillside landscape studded with castles and monuments. You will cycle the longest equipped cycling tunnel in Europe, 1600 m, fully lit and secured for bicycles. You end up at the Château de Berzé le Chatel; from here, if you feel like tackling a short climb, you will be rewarded with a splendid view over the Mâconnais. Arrival in Mâconnais, which has a beautiful old town where a stroll is very enjoyable.

6° day: Mâcon
After breakfast, end of services.
