Description

Day 1: Arrival in Scanno
Arriving at the romantic setting of the town of Scanno, you'll be able to explore after meeting your guide and receiving your welcoming briefing to Abruzzo. Scanno is one of Italy's most beautiful villages, and you'll soon understand why. Dating back to medieval times, the village has managed to preserve its historic town centre, which was even depicted by Dutch graphic artist and printmaker, Maurits Cornelis Escher. Scanno is also known as the village of goldsmiths. Visiting a shop to see the crafting of the traditional Presentosa, a piece of filigree silverwork, is truly a unique experience. Lastly, the traditional dress of Scanno women is a true journey back in time. Enjoy a typical evening meal and overnight stay.

Day 2: Scanno – Bugnara (37 km, altitude change: 613 mt.)
After breakfast, we'll head off towards Anversa degli Abruzzi, leaving the lake behind and passing through the stunning Sagittario Gorges. Our journey will take us past Villalago, Lake San Domenico, and to a visit to the hermitage. Having passed Anversa (a favorite film location) and admired Castrovalva from afar (where Escher lived), we'll make our way towards our final stop (Bugnara), potentially visiting the WWF oasis along the way.
Arrival at residence. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Bugnara – Corfinio (33 km, altitude change: 482 mt.)
Shortly after leaving, we'll encounter the first village of today's route: Introdacqua. We'll then move on to Sulmona, a must-visit cultural destination in Abruzzo with its monumental historic town centre. There is lots to see, starting with the Roman aqueduct, Garibaldi Square (which hosts the Palio), and in the distance, we can admire Pacentro, another one of Italy's most beautiful villages. Our path will take us to Pratola Peligna, where we can see the gorgeous Abbey of Santo Spirito al Morrone, situated at the foot of the Majella National Park and then to Corfinio. Perhaps not everyone knows that Corfinio, a small town of barely a thousand inhabitants located near the Aterno basin, was Italy's first capital over 2000 years ago. Yes, the concept of "Italy" has much older origins than we might think. We'll also visit the magnificent San Pelino Church.
Arrival at residence. Enjoy a typical dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Corfinio – Sulmona (34 km, altitude change: 692 mt.)
Leaving Corfinio behind on the old road to Rome, we'll reach Raiano and visit the beautiful San Venanzio Gorges, and visit the hermitage nestled in the rocks. We'll climb to Vittorito, the town of wine, on an old captivating road before descending to Popoli where we'll visit the Pescara river springs and reach Sulmona, which we briefly visited the day before. Today we'll have a closer look at the town, including its production of sugared almonds, a leading local product.
Arrival at residence. Dinner with local products and overnight stay.

Day 5: Sulmona – Pacentro – Sulmona (25 km, altitude change: 500 mt.)
Today our loop itinerary will allow us to get to know the village of Pacentro, which we sneaked a distant peek at during the past few days. Now we'll conquer it using a road that enters the heart of Majella. The medieval village is the natural gateway and heart of the Maiella National Park, at the foot of Mount Morrone. We'll see the castle, which overlooks the village with its two towers, and a complicated succession of houses and roofs to the top of the hill. Legend attributes the town's founding to the Trojan hero Pacinus. After leaving Aeneas on the banks of the Tiber, it's said he headed towards Sannio and reached the foot of Mount Morrone where he founded Pacentro, which received recent fame as the birthplace of pop star Madonna's family before they emigrated to the United States. We'll return to Sulmona on a descending route. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Sulmona
After breakfast, end of services.
