Description

Day 1: Forcalquier/Manosque
Individual arrival in Provence at Manosque or Forcalquier. A transfer will take you to your first accommodation, less than two miles from the center of Forcalquier, in a peaceful village. An early arrival allows you to visit the L’Occitane factory in Manosque (guided tours in English need to be booked in advance). Before dinner in the city, take some time to visit the citadel and its famous open-air market, depending on the day of arrival. Forcalquier is a fascinating introduction to the Provencal way of life!

Day 2: Forcalquier – Aubignosc (33 km; +490/-560 m)
After breakfast, the welcome briefing takes place before hopping on your bike and setting off. The bike tour begins at the foot of the Lure Mountain, a perfect example of the rugged landscape of Upper Provence. Along the route, you will enjoy superb views of the Sainte-Victoire mountain to the southwest, along with the Valensole Plateau. Leaving behind the wilderness, you will venture into the Durance river valley where you can admire the iconic Pénitents des Mées. These natural structures are made up of a row of columnar rocks extending for two kilometers and are 100 meters high. This evening, you will stay in the village of Aubignosc, on the right bank of the Durance river.

Day 3: Aubignosc – Moustiers Sainte Marie (54 km, +1010/-810 m)
Get your legs ready for a gradual, but gentle bike climb on the Valensole Plateau. The so-called Lavender Plateau offers a picturesque and colorful landscape, especially in summer when the lavender fields are in bloom. From this position, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the most famous mountains in Provence such as the Sainte-Victoire, Sainte Baume, Mont Ventoux, Lure Mountain, and the Devoluy Prealps. Traveling on small roads, you will soon find yourself surrounded by magnificent lavender and sunflower fields. You will then cross the Roman town of Riez before reaching Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a hilltop village famous for its faïence, hand-painted Provencal earthenware.

Day 4: Moustiers Sainte Marie
Today, you can relax and enjoy the magic of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. At an altitude of 630 meters, this medieval town is located at the foot of two rocky cliffs: no matter which direction you look, the views are astounding! The so-called ceramic capital has many workshops that produce faïence and almost 30 shops that display local products. If you prefer to get back in the saddle, you can take advantage of the day to do an optional circuit (61 km; +2410/-2410 m) including the Verdon Gorges and some fabulous cliff views. The village of La Palud is the start of the Route des Crêtes (crest road) and offers many panoramic viewpoints not to be missed. One of these viewpoints, known as the Sublime Point, is located among the castle ruins at the foot of the village of Rougon and will give you a fantastic panorama.

Day 5: Moustiers Sainte Marie – Gréoux-les-Bains (39 km; +320/-560 m)
After a short steep climb of one mile, you will cycle gently along the banks of the vast Lake Sainte-Croix. The typically calm waters will paint a beautiful backdrop for your lovely bike ride. Proceeding on secondary roads through characteristic villages, such as Allemagne-en-Provence with its 13th-century castle and beautiful fountain. Let yourself be guided by the scent of the lavender fields that will take you to a local lavender distillery: the Angelvin Distillery, which you can visit if you wish. Lavender is not the only surprise along this stage: the route will take you to a local goat cheese producer, often open to visitors, before skirting a long slope to the spa town of Gréoux-Les-Bains. The ancient Roman city of Gréoux-Les-Bains is a popular destination for its mineral hot springs. Therefore, take some time to enjoy the thermal baths, known for their therapeutic and beneficial effects. The shorter option of this day will not take you through the Valensole plateau, but from Allemagne-en-Provence, you will reach Gréoux-les-Bains via the main road, on predominantly flat terrain.

Day 6: Manosque
After a pleasant breakfast, a transfer will take you back to Manosque. If you decide to take a train or bus later in the day, we suggest you visit the medieval citadel of Manosque or the L’Occitane factory, if you were unable to do so on the first day.
