Description

Meeting in La Spezia and the start of the Gulf of Poets bike tour, heading to Le Grazie, a village nestled in a quiet bay with very ancient origins and a historic center that developed around the 15th-century Church of Our Lady of Grace, the patron of the village.

Today's stage of the Gulf of Poets bike tour also passes in the area of Old Varignano, where there are remnants dating back to the first half of the 1st century BC of the Roman Villa of Varignano, located at the bottom of a small valley, green with olive trees, abundant in water and overlooking a protected bay, an ideal site at the time for docking and sheltering small boats.

Your tour in the Gulf of Poets by bike continues towards Monte Castellana, which rises up to 512 meters within the municipality of Porto Venere, dominating the Gulf of La Spezia and the Ligurian Sea. From its top, on clear days, you can enjoy a 360-degree view ranging from the Apennine mountains to the farthest visible point, the port of Livorno, including the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, such as Gorgona Island, Capraia Island and Elba Island. It's a unique lookout, chosen for its peculiarities as early as the 1800s by Napoleon, who made La Spezia a military port, stationed his main naval forces and a constructed a arsenal for the defense of the entire Gulf. Napoleon also built a fort on Castellana.

You will then reach Campiglia, where we will stop for an excellent aperitif of local products. It's an enchanting village, located at 400 meters above sea level, on the hillside that encloses the Gulf of La Spezia to the West. Part of the Cinque Terre National Park, it offers panoramic views extending beyond the eastern area of the Gulf, to the Apuan Alps. Probably a pre-Roman settlement, the village still preserves archaeological remains in nearby Castellana and megalithic remains at Monte della Madonna, in nearby Tramonti di Biassa. Another prestigious art element of the village is the Church of Saint Catherine, the patron of the village, located in the main square and whose first historical records date back to 1326.

The itinerary in the Gulf of Poets by bike then continues towards Monte Parodi, which rises to 673 metres above sea level in the northwestern part of the Gulf of La Spezia. The terrain descends with the hills to the south and reaches the sea at Porto Venere. The mountain marks the border between the municipality of La Spezia and the Cinque Terre National Park, to which it is linked by a path. From Parodi, you can also access the high route of the Ligurian mountains or connect to the trail network of Cinque Terre. From the top of the relief, a spectacular panorama can be admired, especially on cold and clear winter days, that sweeps from Monte Saccarello to Monviso, covers the entire Emilian Apennines and Apuan Alps, and ends with the islands of the Tuscan archipelago and Corsica.

Finally reaching Volastra, an ancient hill village shaped like an amphitheater, 300 meters above sea level, just above Manarola, and a district of Riomaggiore. The name of the village comes from the Latin Vicus oleaster, the village of the olives / oil. The shape of the village is circular, probably of Etruscan origin but, according to local tradition, has Roman origins. The houses overlook the alleys and are decorated with stone portals dating back to the sixteenth century. Just outside the town, you'll find the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Health, connected to the four villages by the Via dei Santuari. Originally consecrated to Saint Lawrence and in the sixteenth century to the Virgin, this sacred place dates back to the twelfth century and is in Romanesque style with a frescoed ceiling and a facade embellished with a Gothic mullioned window.

End of the Gulf of Poets bike tour with the return to the starting point and end of services.
